Jiminy Glick in LaLawood

I’m honestly a little amazed that no one has mentioned this film yet – let alone seen it. I mean, you people obviously aren’t afraid to watch shitty films as evidenced by discussions on Catwoman, Fantastic Four, and Two-Lane Blacktop. Also, I know there are big fans of SCTV here. Bruns I think is a big Martin Short fan, and I think Reynolds is as admiring of Clifford as I am.

Also, the Jiminy Glick show on Comedy Central was consistently funny. Watching A-listers like Tom Hanks and Seinfeld stare in amazement as Glick brings up incredibly obscure points about their lives and then stuffs his face with donuts and candy – It made for good TV.

Still, no one has mentioned the film. I rented it last night b/c Dayna was out of the house. Scorn was heaped upon me at the video store (She did admit to like Inner Space though) and I took it home and dug in.

It starts off with some top-notch SCTV styled celebrity impersonation. Short does a great mean-spiritied sendup of David Lynch, which alone might be worth making this watchable.

It descended after that.

I started drinking and losing a bit of interest. I made a Healthy Choice dinner with chicken and pasta, and discovered a 3/4 bottle of wine near the couch. The sauce on the chicken smelled a little weird, but tasted fine. Glick’s wife was played by Jan Hooks – who I never thought was funny. Plus she was on Designing Women. That was an awful show.

I paused the DVD to check my email. Hey! I sold a Tav Falco CD on Amazon for $20. Cool. Hmm. Maybe I dont want to lose that Tav Falco CD…. I’ve never actually listened to it once, but still, Alex Chilton plays guitar on it…

Hey – there’s a good online game similar to Risk called Conqueror. Mike, I know that you used to play Risk on the computer a lot. I know you’re technically a grown-up now and far too busy to even thank me for sending you that book on international horror cinema, but you should check it out: it’s at http://www.conquerorgame.com/
I like it b/c you set a time limit – If you only have an hour to play, the game ends after one hour. You can play against real people on-line or against AI. It’s all set in Europe in 1000 a.d. the peasants can revolt, you have to raise taxes to pay for the troops, etc. It’s fun.

It’s pretty cold in L.A. I know none of you live here any more, and it’s a hell of a lot colder in … wherever. But I have to wear a sweater around the house at night and turn on the heat.

I think I came in 1st place in Conqueror… The guy in the middle east was kicking ass but as the game was about to end I sent all my troops in Denamrk to take over another’s player’s capital, and that gave me enough points to eek out the win.

By then I had been drinking for quite a while and wrote something on my blog about how Glenn Danzig’s house is the only one on his block without christmas lights.

Mark Mauer likes movies cuz the pictures move, and the screen talks like it's people. He once watched Tales from the Gilmli Hostpial three times in a single night, and is amazed DeNiro made good movies throughout the 80s, only to screw it all up in the 90s and beyond. He has met both Udo Kier and Werner Herzog, and he knows an Irishman who can quote at length from the autobiography of Klaus Kinksi.

  1. you “eeked” out a win? was this some strange fetish room you were in populated by people dressed as mice? i don’t blame dayna for staying out as often as she apparently does.

i will watch glick. i take great pleasure in people who push their shtick way past the point of it being funny (see my tolerance of mike, lo these 13 years) and enjoyed the show as and when i caught it.
