  1. I was bored so I did some sleuthing using John’s recommended site–on that site it appeared you could contact his widow and do a rental directly from her. the ony other alternative appeared to be this filmmakers’ cooperative site from New York City: http://www.film-makerscoop.com/

you would need to have an institution like the university do the rental and it appears that the rental fee for a single showing is $80 plus shipping/handling/insurance. why are you looking for it, gio? getting into the avant-garde?

  2. i posted this on behalf of simon. i have no idea whatsoever what this film is about; the only thing i know is that nothing happens in it. i’ll let simon answer what’s up with his interest in the avant-garde!

thanks, michael and john, for your help!

  3. Why Passing Through exactly . . . there is a really great two-disc compilation of Brakhage’s work through Criterion DVD. I own it and like it very much and will force it down students throats on ocassion just to make them squirm.

  4. Thanks to all of you for your tips.

Michael, yes, I had come to the same conclusion. I may work on the university to do so if I care enough. I was hoping there was an easier way to see the film, though.

Jeff, it has to be “Passage Through: A Ritual”, which unfortunately is not on the Criterion compilation. Reason? I’m making a website devoted to Couperin’s piece “Les Barricades Mysterieuses” and the ways in which it has been riffed on by other artists. A guy called Philip Corner, after seeing Brakhage’s “Lumen I”, wrote a piece called “Through the Mysterious Barricades”, based on the Couperin, and sent it to Brakhage, who then used the piece as music for “Passage Through: A Ritual”.
