in praise of weird al (and youtube)

posted by arnab @ 10:42 am

weird al interviews celine dion and pays homage to bob dylan. i love when he tells dion that they’re all out of drinks. (links to lots of other “interviews” from the celine dion one. )

does anyone know where these originally aired? anyway: please link to your favourite stuff on youtube so i can waste even more of my time.

Wow–at that positiveape site Mark posted there is an amazing video by a group called OK GO–scroll down a little to the weird guys on treadmills….

Yeah, one of the members of the band was on The Colbert Report last night. They produce these videos on their own dime and have been working with the same choreographer on a number of projects. Pretty cool.

Here’s a blog of horror films - particularly Asian horror film releases.

I guess the OK GO video is all right, they’re a major label band using indie label methods to get noticed. I didn’t care for their first album a few years ago and kind of forgot about them. Music videos in general seem comnpletely pointless to me - I don’t know what possible use or funtion they play, though in this band’s case, it got them noticed where their label was useless in doing so. There’s some recent records out that I like; I’m not being a complete bitter “Back-in-my-day-music-was-good” crank. Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom record has some good stuff on it. Psapp might be quite good; not sure yet. I like Rose Melberg’s solo album - she used to be in Tiger Trap. Paul Weller’s new double live album is surprisingly quite good too. New record by Old Crow Medicine Show I’ve not heard yet, but it’ll probably be great, and they’re a band worth cataching live.

Holy cats. Earth people of the 1970s were fantastic.

i like when after the 4th replay the announcer notes, “powers’ jump was unsuccessful”. oops, spoiler!

    nikki,

thanks for the heads up!!! somehow, i doubt this will come anywhere near me, but one can hope and pray.

Gio, Borat will most definitely make it to Dade County. Newsweek recently picked it as one of the must-see films for fall, and it is certainly receiving a national release.

For those with a fast connection and a love of odd movie music: I’ve been finding some excellent music blogs lately: Apparently there’s a kind of code of honor where if one blog posts a link to a soundtrack, then it’s off limits to other blogs. And the blog that DID post the link may pull it down after a few days for bandwidth or legal reasons. On the plus side it means a lot of these blogs are digging deep into obscure Italian, French and Japanese soundtracks. On the bad side, you have to search many different blogs to find something specific, and even then the link may be expired.

Still, here are two that I’ve just been bowled over by, the music is so damn cool:

is this musical honor code only for soundtracks? bizarre, hey?

Not youtube, but doing the rounds in a similar fashion, is this video link:

    http://wallstfolly.typepad.com/wallstfolly/2006/10/alexey_vayner_n.html

It is apparently part of the (genuine) resume and application of a Yale student for a job in the financial sector. No doubt this will soon become a required part of any job application. I am very glad that I got a job before the online video age.

I’ve no idea where this belongs. Probably nowhere, but it has a vague claim to be about movies, though it is more about tenure:

Excellent song. What do you make of the ending?

  22. chris Says:

I don’t know, unless ‘kill’ is being used in the sense of ‘knock ‘em dead.’

  23. arnab Says:

i’m more worried about the fact that he thinks that jim morrison’s name should not be taken in vain.

  24. Chris Says:

Someone is very excited about getting tenure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKW3DzcUEOI

  25. Chris Says:

This version was inevitable. Vulgar, but pretty damn funny.

In case you have any questions about Marxist concepts (and who among us does not?) I recommend this collection of YouTube videos by a former student of mine. I taught him some Marxist theory, but he now appears to understand it better than I do, and he certainly explains it better. http://www.youtube.com/user/brendanmcooney

For a weak link to film, see his “The Matrix and the Machines” video.
