  1. 2007 in film bumper quiz
You scored 14 out of a possible 30
Not bad at all, though you’ve a way to go before you can claim to be a cinephile of the 2007 vintage. All the way to your local cinema or DVD rental outlet (the verdict on my quiz).

That’s ok–I didn’t know what they were talking about most of the time. After all two of the best things I saw in 2007 were puppet animation adaptations by Czech directors of moldy literary classics: Svankmajer’s “Don Juan” and Jiri Barta’s “Pied Piper of Hamelin.”

  2. more ridiculous than high brow, I think. right now I am squashing an urge, in the downtime between opening presents and chowing down, to run out and see the new Aliens vs Predator movie on Christmas day. I’ll have the decorum to wait until tomorrow when I see whether my urge for an indie slice of life (Juno) will overpower my inner 15 years old (AVP). I want to see Charlie Wilson’s War but I feel like I will have to admire Sorkin’s arch dialogue and Nichols’ delicate satire. I remember the political 1980s…and fuck it.

anyway, merry christmas everyone, too (even Chris who must have gone out to see National Treasure: Book of Secrets on opening day. Ha!

random note to Denzel: I believe we have “advanced” adequately where we no longer need inspirational movies about scrappy black kids beating the snotty Harvard kids (white, I assume) at, of all things, debate. And word is that this group, according to the historical record, beat USC kids–but USC doesn’t inspire the same kind of class envy, aura of white privilege I guess. maybe it’s the football team, cuz I remember a kid getting picked up by his father in his private helicopter. I am also worried that a film like this will make my students expect me to shout inspirational phrases like “I am here to unlock your righteous mind!” and, then, to go places with them.

more violence in movies I say, and less uplift. How do you think those spunky black kids would fare against the acid-dripping aliens?

  3. Amen, indeed. And I scored the same as you, Michael, so I feel proud. Let’s you and I all the way to our local cinema or DVD rental outlet soon, eh?

It’s now December 26. Thank baby fucking Jesus.

  4. I’d be at ‘Alien v Predator: Requiem’ right now if it weren’t for the 80 degree weather here in Florida, far from the ice and snow of Ohio, and even the water seems inviting. I wonder if the number of movies I watch is somehow related to the crappiness of the local climate.

Anyone get any good DVDs as presents? I got season 4 of ‘The Wire’, the four-disc version of the new ‘Bladerunner’ release (‘Bladerunner: The Final Cut’), and ‘Stranger than Paradise.’ Leaving Ohio for Florida is never so perfect as having just watched Willie, Eva and Eddie do the same.

  5. W.C. Field’s Comedy Collection (I got the first volume–so I felt compelled to get the second collection myself); Looney Tunes’ Golden Collection Volume 1; the new Futurama DVD-only movie, The Ramones’ “It’s Alive” DVD….and for myself I sprung for the Criterion Collections Army of Shadows and L’Eclisse . four discs of Blade Runner , eh? Chris–are you committed to watching every single special feature and every version of the film?

  6. I think there are four versions released (5, 4, 3 and 2 discs respectively). This was the only version that gave me the new cut (no doubt containing 17 seconds of new material) plus the old director’s cut. Truthfully, I just wanted ‘Bladerunner’ on DVD so I can throw out my old video version. I’ve always liked the movie (a lot) but I found myself teaching a bit of it this past semester, so I thought it would be useful to have it on DVD.

  7. Happy Holidays all!

I got a 20 out of 30 on the quiz (damn you Samira Makhmalbaf).

I got the Twin Peaks Definitive Gold Box Collection, an anthology of experimental films by Maya Deren, a documentary on theatre artist Robert Wilson (Absolute Wilson) and the new and improved, two-disc Criterion version of Fritz Lang’s M. Yay cinema!

  8. These weren’t exactly Christmas gifts, but how’s this for Christmas blasphemy: I traded in a dozen or so perfect LPs by John Coltrane (the Rhino Heavyweight Champion collection) thinking I’d get a nice DVD set.

But I didn’t find anything I really wanted. So while you’re all watching your 12 DVD Blade Runner sets, I got the complete run of the 1980s Buck Rogers series starring Gil Gerard and Erin Grey (hubba hubba). Also a 3 DVD set of Sgt. Bilko.

However, I am wondering if I shouldn’t try to tackle Berlin Alexanderplatz. Has anyone done that? I was on a Fassbinder kick a couple of years ago and loved nearly everything I watched, and this seems like a good way to kill a few days.

Also, over last weekend we watched the whole 17 episode run of Apatow’s series, Undeclared. It was funnier and better than I remembered with fine cameos from Will Ferrel, Jason Segel, Ben Stiller, Kyle Gass, Martin Starr and others. It can’t help but pale next to Freaks and Geeks, but a few years removed from it, it hold up quite well.

  9. i didn’t get any presents for christmas. i can’t expect anything from sunhee, but i thought my blog buddies would have got me something? i’m going to cry now (like a fucking baby).
