Meet Me at the Santa Monica Pier?

The Society for Cinema and Media Studies will be holding their 2010 conference in Los Angeles. The conference theme is as follows: “SCMS at 50/LA: Archiving the Future/Mobilizing the Past.” I’m not really sure what that means, but I never really do. A close look at the conference program for 2008 suggests a fairly broad array of topics and approaches. Wouldn’t it be fun to put together a panel? I’m sure we could find some way to unite our interests. I delivered a paper at their 2003 Minneapolis conference, but I am not an active member. Anybody know more? Anybody interested?

  1. Hey, I’d be up for a panel. Or, rather, I’d be up for a trip–and I could see coming up with a panel. It’s a long way away, though, right? Next year, May… Let’s do the adult thing, and wait ’til the deadline to think about it again.

I kid, I kid. It might be fun to dredge up one of our debates from some thread here?

  2. I’m game too. Though the conference is March, not May (this year’s is May, but that’s only because it’s in Tokyo). Typically, the deadline for posting call for papers is mid July, so it’s not that far away at all. So maybe we should get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. Maybe over email, rather than here?

By the way, if anyone is interested, we’ve uploaded the top three winners of this year’s Student Film Festival to the College’s iTunesU site. Just click here if you’re interested.

  3. I watched the CoC films. I think I enjoyed “Andre the Miniature” the most, but “The City Green” was certainly more ambitious and managed to sustain it’s enigmatic mood of mystery throughout (not an easy task). There is a shot where the young man (Roger?) is walking down the street which cuts to him finding a seat in the coffee shop–a simple but sophisticated piece of editing. And I like fire. Nice work.

  4. SCMS Tokyo was canceled due to the H1N1 virus scare. Alicia and I are devastated, but it’s not going to stop us from going. We’ll just have more time to spare now.

There’s talk of a joint Tokyo-Los Angeles thingy in 2010, but I doubt it’ll happen.

Anyway, if anyone is still up for next year’s SCMS conference, let’s talk over the summer.

  5. Virus? Bastards. Get ’em back by releasing sarin into the subways.

I forgot about the SCMS thing in LA. Yes–I say let’s. How about a panel where we just bitch at one another? It always interests me.

I just misspelled panel as penal. Probably something to that.

And, John, I meant to post about the student films–I thought they were pretty cool. Particularly “The City Green,” for mood, as Jeff mentioned. I think it’s hard to sustain tone like that, and it worked very well.

  6. The Japanese man . . . some of the most paranoid folks on earth. Still, better to be wandering around the streets of Shibuya, Roppongi, Shinjuku and Harajuku than sitting in a hotel listening to grad students elucidate on neuro-cognitive research, digital media, and the 21st century spectator.

  7. The SCMS opened up its call for papers, and there have been a couple of panel proposals posted on the bulletin board. It’s still a bit early, but I thought I’d mention a few things.

If we put together a pre-formed panel, we don’t need to bother with the CFP. We can just submit the panel proposal before the September 1 deadline.

Panels are usually made up of 4 panelists. But do we have more than four of us interested in putting together something? So far, I’ve got a sense that it’s just me, Jeff, and reynolds. Any other takers?

If we end up with more than four, we might consider doing two panels, in which case we would need to post a CFP on the bulletin board in order to solicit the requisite number of panelists. The dealine for posting a CFP on the SCMS bulletin board is July 15.

With that in mind, do we want to start mulling over topics? Do we do so here, or do we start a wiki or something? Or just via email?

  8. Chris is fucking with you. I’m up for it! Topic open…

–stuff on Crash? I thought our discussion there was heated and intriguing
–stuff on Genre (No Country for Old Men?)

The most “appealing” thing about our proposal might be to sell the dynamics of the “blog” (as intellectual work)?

  9. I just came back from a conference where I presented a paper entitled “Institutional Change in European Industrial Relations: The Cases of Britain, France and Sweden.” Even I was bored by the paper, and it was among the more interesting ones at the conference. The rest of you have way more fun.

Don’t forget discussion on the blog about the value of the middlebrow. I’d tune into a podcast of Reynolds and Jeff arguing that one.

  10. Chris, you can’t beg off with the old “I’m-a-political-scientist” excuse, right?

The middlebrow — yeah. And sleaze, too.

This is our wiki. In order to access it and post comments, I’ll need to invite you. So please send me your email addresses (I have Jeff’s already, so he’s been added). You can send your emails to my address (which you can find by clicking my name, right next to that #17, above). Or you can put it here in a comment, as Jeff did. Then once I have it, Jeff can delete the comment. I might have some of your addresses already.

  12. I’m sorry Chris. I really do like your title. I think it would be a fascinating paper I’d want to hear it; do you want to write it?

  13. I’m only lurking on Porkchop Express, not participating: it is important to know one’s intellectual limits. Not that this extends to my contributions to this blog where I remain confident of my ability to comment with authority on the “blowing shit up” genre.

  14. Don’t be a puff Chris! Your ideas are as valid and smart as anyone else here. It would be great if you would be a part of the process and the panel!

  15. It happens on Friday in the PM. Arnab has lined up a grand list of restaurants where we shall dine. I suspect I will be a few pounds heavier by the end of the weekend (and happier for it). Mauer has invited us over for insults and injury, which promises to be a treat. We may even take in another panel or two. If any of these boys start visiting old girlfriends, I shall be watching NCAA basketball and keeping my lips locked.
