Best of the Decade?

I’ve seen all of these but seven and cannot disagree with the number one entry. What are your thoughts? Was really pleased to see This is England at number thirteen (ok, it is a British newspaper, but nobody seemed willing to take me up on Meadow’s excellent little film–Chris I’m pointing my finger at you–so I gloat in hopes you will queue it up). Seems like a good place to start thinking about the decade even if the glories of 2010 are still yet to be determined . . .

  1. i want to register my great pleasure at the inclusion of Me, You, and Everyone We Know, which deals with romance, being just a regular schmo and a regular plain looking girl, child pain, and race, among other things, in an extraordinarily simple, direct, uninflated way that touched me deeply. Also, and more predictably, Waltz with Bashir, not because of its stunning graphics and courage in dealing with israel’s dirty laundry, but because it explores the issue of trauma with incredible theoretical sophistication yet remains a tremendously compelling movie to watch. I still don’t see what’s all the madness about There Will Be Blood, a good movie and a great performance but, as far as i am concerned, whatever. i’m sorry that Sideways and Little Miss Sunshine ever got made because i have to keep seeing them mentioned in lists like this, which makes me sad and angry. Yay 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days, a film about good people and the terrible violence of womanhood. I love Casino Royale with all my heart, mostly because of 1. the opening chase, 2. eva green, and 3. venice, but, eighth? I have no problem with the first three.

now, what i really wanted to say: where is XXY in this list?

  2. any list of 100 is bound to have head-scratchers in it perhaps, but i don’t know why yi yi and amores perroes are so low. or why milk, slumdog millionaire (and the ones gio mentioned) are so high. i think yi yi should be near the very top.

gio, they do have l’enfant on the list, right below there will be blood.
