  1. I don’t really like soccer, but I did like the vuvuzelas.

Can I talk about Louis CK here?

Or–better yet–Arnab, we demand that we follow through on Gio’s request: invite a couple more folks she suggests would be interested. You bastard.

I think Spain dunked a basket at the end, in the fifteenth inning.

  3. Does anyone here agree that the last two World Cup finals matches have been disappointing? Fouls have stolen the show in each (Zidane’s headbutt in 2006, 14 yellow cards and 1 red in 2010). Ned had the best joke I’ve heard so far. I asked him if he watched the World Cup final and he said yes, and that he got a yellow card.

Which was worse, game 7 of the NBA finals or the World Cup final?

Who watched the MLB All-Star Game? Who gives a f##k? Steinbrenner is dead. Who gives a f##k? Who has seen Get Him to the Greek? Who here liked it as much as I did?

  4. john, you have changed my life with f##k that squid. i’m now using regularly and getting tons of props. i have told no one it’s not mine and i hope you won’t either.

the last two world cup finals sucked. i was ashamed that my national team won one of them. at least spain won with an honorable goal after a really good tournament. i don’t begrudge spain its victory. it was deserved. four years ago, i had to do a lot of mental compartmentalization and subtle self-deceiving to enjoy italy’s victory.

    that cannavaro, though, what capitano!

  5. I watched it in the south of France, so I appreciated the fact that I understood not a word of the “commentary”. Plus, we were only about thirty miles or so from the Spanish border so the screams and vuvuzelas dancing into the wee hours made me feel frustrated in an anthropologically appropriate way. Plus, I was in a room with a bunch of Brits, and they still can’t stop talking about 1966 and the various “hands of God” who have ruined their lives for the last forty-five years.

  6. Now that Jeff has located himself geographically during the World Cup I hope Gio won’t jump down my throat if I say that I was also in Europe for most of the World Cup: in France when Italy and France were knocked out and in the UK when England was knocked out. The French press and British press were absolutely brutal to their respective teams. I felt rather sorry for the French players and had some sympathy for their revolt against their fool of a coach. But I couldn’t summon up much sympathy for England; no objective assessment could look at that team and expect success in the international arena. There were maybe five players who deserved to be at the World Cup but the rest were so mediocre it was embarrassing to see them huffing and puffing on the field.

It must be nice to be on the American team and know that mediocrity counts as success. All Landon Donavon has to do is not fall over his own feet and the crowds go wild.

  7. I didn’t get a chance to see as many matches as I would have liked, but I think my favorite match was Slovakia v. Italy in the group stage, Slovakia knocking Italy out with a 3-2 victory. I was in Hong Kong, so I was able to watch it at 10:00pm, which was perfect. A desperate and furious onslaught by Italy late in the match.

The crowds go wild because Donovan is perhaps the best footballer the U.S. has produced. His late goal against Algeria was the most exciting thing in the history of American soccer–as sad and small as that history is. And he’s a fast motherfucker in the final third.

  8. my favourite match was ruritania versus the ottoman empire. it was cool when the ruritarian coach, colonel zapt, substituted a look-alike for the inept center forward and he swam the moat and killed two defenders before scoring many goals with the beauteous ottoman goalkeeper flavia. of course, i was in the carpathians at the time, vacationing with a tribe of geese.
