Cowboys & Aliens

This is a movie about the most inefficient interstellar gold-mining operation ever conceived.

  1. I liked Cowboys. It was so clearly an old-fashioned western in structure and tone, but with aliens thrown in for no obvious reason other than to allow cowboys, indians, lawmen, townsfolk and crooks to unite against a common foe. Easily the most restrained performance by Harrison Ford in living memory, and a suitably laconic Craig as well. In fact, almost every performance was a pleasure to watch (Keith Carradine, Sam Rockwell…). Overall, it is just plain competent, which may make this the best movie of the summer so far.

  2. Well, sure–it was competent–and I did enjoy it, well enough, as I enjoyed Captain America last week. In both cases, though, I felt aggravated at a) the lack of a real sense of rush or b) the failure for the films’ overall wit to match up to their respective moments of delight. Good performances, a clear sense of purpose, some relative fun–each worth a look…

but the best film of the summer is still Bridesmaids, by a long shot.

  3. The extent of my wisdom on Cowboys is above. I now only speak in precise bons mots.

I just didn’t account for Fb’s posting protocols, which simply point to a snapshot of the site, and pull in text from the main page–in this case, from some other review.

  4. I agree with Mike about Bridesmaids, which I watched last night. I’d erase only two or three things about it. “You’re ride’s here” I saw coming and hoped I would not see. It came, and I suppose I was okay with it.

This film reaffirms what I’ve known for a long time now: Kristen Wiig is one of the finest comic actors around. But she also handles pathos really well. The scene where she makes a single, perfect cupcake for herself, then eats it, is wonderful. But a real surprise was Melissa McCarthy, who very nearly steals the movie from Wiig.

Some great little moments of insanity, which I’ve now come to expect from smart comedies like this. And great lines, too, like “You smell like pine needles and you have a face like sunshine.”
