Titicut Follies

I’m trying to find a copy of this, and I’ve had no luck whatsoever. It’s been banned from distribution, is what I hear. Anyone have a copy or know where I can get one? E-mail me.

  1. 1967 documentary by Frederick Wiseman. It exposes the horrid conditions at a state prison for the criminally insane in Bridgewater, Mass.

It was banned by the Massachusetts Supreme Court until 1992, and it still remains very hard to find. Zipporah Films, which owns the rights, charges $500 for a copy. $250 to rent.

  2. The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled it was a violation of the inmates’ privacy rights.

By the way, anyone have a copy of Cocksucker Blues?

  3. My friend Jon Wahl (of Clawhammer “fame”) has a very nice copy of Cocksucker Blues. And Jerry’s Video has it on DVD. But they’ll charge you $300 if you “lose” it.

  4. I guess it can be a sex-farce, in the way “Salo: 120 Days of Sodom” is a sex farce. But I think what Arnab has in mind is something more along the lines of “The Talented Mrs. Nipply” or “Das Boobs.”

  5. I just received a flyer from Zipporah Films announcing that you can buy Frederick Wiseman documentaries at “greatly reduced prices” until Septmeber 30, 2006. The “greatly reduced prices”? Here they are:

    5 films for $1,500
    10 films for $2,000
    15 films for $2,500
    20 films for $3,000
    25 films for $3,500
    30 films for $4,000

What grade of square time Bob are they smoking over there at Zipporah Films?

  6. why don’t you guys borrow films through interlibrary loan?

I love my public library and use it more often than Netflix. But it’s a little tricky with Wiseman. I’ve never seen his stuff in a public library or a video store (video store chain, that is). He doesn’t distribute his films except through his own little company. I suspect only colleges and universities carry his films, and videos/DVDs are typically library use only, non-circulating that is.

But I’ll give it a go, thanks Gio. And thank you, Zaccardo.

  7. I read online that Wiseman is considering releasing dvd versions of his films to the public by the end of the year. Could be crap, you never know but it’s a chance. Of course, there’s like 50 people selling bootleg copies for $30 bucks…

  8. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wiseman eventually does this before he dies. There would be lots of advantages for him (income, exposure, building his legacy…) and it would cut down on people, like the evil John B., who get Wiseman films on bootlegs from questionable sources.

  9. Has anybody been able to locate a bootleg of Titcut Follies? I’m a social worker and am VERY interested in getting my hands on a copy… I don’t know where to start! Any suggestions???? Thanks!
